Can I consolidate a Plus Loan?

Yes, but only under the Standard or Graduated Repayment Plan.

Can I consolidate a Perkins Loan?

Yes, but only if you include a Stafford Loan in the consolidation along with the Perkins Loan.

Can I consolidate if I am in school?

Only if you consolidate before July 1, 2011 and meet the following requirements:
Direct Loan Program loan
FFEL Program loan that has been purchased by the U.S. Department of Education
FFEL Program loan held by an eligible lender

Can I consolidate if I am in default or being garnished:

Yes, but only the under the Income Based or Income Contingent Repayment Plan. This will actually bring your loan
out of default and stop any wage garnishment.

Can I consolidate my loans if they are in the grace period?

Yes, but unless you wait until you are in the fourth month of your grace period, you will lose your grace period.

Can I consolidate an existing Consolidation Loan?

Yes under the following 3 conditions: If you are adding in at least one other FFEL or Direct Loan into the consolidation. If your Consolidation Loan is in default. If you intend on applying for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

Can I consolidate jointly with my spouse?

No.

How long does it take to consolidate my loans?

60 to 90 days

When can I expect my first monthly payment to be due?

Within 60 days from the first disbursement of their Direct Consolidation Loan.

Can I prepay my loan?

Yes, you can prepay all or part of the loan balance without penalty.

Can I add a loan onto the consolidation after I consolidate?

Yes, you can fill out an add on form with the Loan Holder’s information within 180 days from consolidating. After 180 days you would be required to complete the consolidation process over again.
